M-commerce equals M-reservations!
What’s the difference you ask? Well, where E-commerce uses the Web on a computer screen to run transactions, M-commerce uses much smaller screens on mobile devices. Mobile Commerce connects business and customers via the Internet through wireless devices, cell phones, Palm Pilots, personal digital assistants (PDA’s), handhelds and basically any wireless device.
Although applications for the general consumer industry are showing slow growth, the travel and hospitality industry in particular are poised to take advantage of the growth in M-commerce. What level of growth is expected? Well, the Princeton, NJ-based Kelsey Group is predicting 1.4 billion wireless users by 2005.
With those numbers it’s easy to understand the potential impact of telephony automation and Internet on the travel and hospitality industry. Travel occupies the cutting edge in both spheres and for simple reasons. A travel purchase is inherently a remotely-made decision. Before you go on a trip, you pick up the phone. You look at a map.
As well, travel, by its nature, deals in constantly changing, massive databases of train, plane, and cruise schedules, fares and room availability. In fact, across a wide area, M-commerce will enable business travelers to better access hotel information, find out where rooms are available, check price and room details then make or change reservations from their cell phone or PDA.
With the advent of M-commerce, hoteliers need to realize that online access, i.e., a transactional website, is no longer optional. An increasing number of would-be travelers use the Internet to find, view, evaluate, and book hotels and travel. They want to see the spread of room prices, pictures of the rooms and suites, current availability grid and make a reservation online.
Yet even with the internet, online access is not enough, as even though many travelers have seen the range of services and perhaps made their initial selections via web forms, a large number of them want to follow through by speaking with a live representative. If a hotel's web page has a click-to-talk option or a fast-track 800 number plus real time reservations, the chances of locking in traveler's business go way up.
The M-commerce technology combining the old (telephone/fax) with the new (Internet) is the Wireless Application Protocol (WAP), an open, global standard for communication between a mobile handset and Internet oriented applications which allows users of Web-enabled phones, pagers and PDA’s the ability to search for hotel information, book hotel reservations and access guest loyalty programs using their wireless devices.
Currently a number of the largest hotel chains, have entered the M-commerce arena with the launch of a wireless capability, expanding on their company’s well established Internet presences. Mobile reservations or M-reservations will also become part of the travel industries repertoire.
Yet, the technology is so new, that apart from the larger players or more technologically advanced hotels, few lodging companies have anything up and running.
Considering that the mobile handset is often the hub for working while traveling and the WAP technology simplifies much of the administration around reservations, the travel and hospitality industry should begin thinking how these new technology opportunities can further their E-commerce and M-commerce goals.
In the meantime hoteliers and other players in the travel industry should be rethinking their current E-commerce efforts and concentrate on converting more of those mouse clicks into sales.
Are Websites and Their Cost The Twin Evils of Small Hoteliers?
First, look at the Web sites of major hotels which now contain vital sales collateral and real-time online reservation systems. Web site visitors are now recognized as potential guests. Even visitors who are not booking are now perceived as often being in the important "research" phase of the shopping process. One only has to view the changes and upheaval due to e-commerce in the retail industry to understand and recognize how extensively the Internet has and will affect the hotel industry.
The number of reservations flowing to hotels through the electronic distribution channels, the global distribution systems (GDS) and the Internet is growing steadily. Once a minor contributor of bookings, they are now primary business sources and grow more important with every passing month.
This growth has heightened emphasis throughout the hotel industry on using the electronic distribution channels effectively and maximizing their potential. Every hotelier now faces the challenge of understanding, prioritizing and managing these electronic outlets on behalf of his or her property.
Ask yourself how many of your friends or relatives refer to the Internet while planning a trip? How many are influenced by what they see on the hotel and travel websites? How many buy online? And how many of those who buy online today did not a year ago? This informal survey by yourself of online growth will readily support the many published professional surveys conducted by the hotel industry.
Because, with the maturing of the Internet there needs to be an increased awareness of the "overhead" associated with each distribution channel and such expenses must come under closer and closer scrutiny by hoteliers.
You must strive to control the number of rooms that are offered and sold through each channel if you are aiming to fill your property while simultaneously achieving your lowest practical distribution-related costs.
I agree, and it is quite understood that any hotelier’s immediate goal is selling rooms, yet, while recognizing that the cost of generating that business varies from channel to channel, it should also be noted that a reservation arriving direct to a hotel’s own Web site may be the least expensive while the one from a travel agent using a GDS may be the most.
Thus, when considering the Internet as a necessary evil and the temptation to limit consideration of the Internet to how it only impacts the sale of guest rooms, actually denies the array of other areas where the Internet is having a significant impact on costs, efficiencies and improved margins, such as: Decreased distribution costs, low or no-cost communications, sales material, room descriptions and photos, distribution of marketing collateral, copies of advertisements, access to telephone directories, menus, e-mail accounts and much more.
Finally with regard to investment, apart from the aforementioned advantages, a number of Application System Providers (ASPs) are becoming increasingly visible in the hotel systems marketplace. They offer appealing propositions, such as, monthly rental or purchase of online reservation software systems where the system itself operates remotely and is accessed via an Internet screen.
At issue with the ASP approach is the fact that you continue to pay for a lifetime on a monthly/commission basis. As with any software, purchasing and owning a copy outright can reduce the overall long term costs of ownership dramatically.
Rooms, rates, etc., are controlled easily online by hotel staff, and visitors to the website can readily select, reserve, confirm and pay online. There is no doubt in my mind that the current negative perception by some hoteliers of their hotel website will undergo radical change as they better understand its increasing importance in their distribution strategy and the possibilities offered by the purchase approach to resolving their investment concerns.
Have Hotel Rooms Become a Commodity?
In fact, the travel marketplace is a global arena where millions of buyers (travel agents and the public) search for travel services and sellers (hotels, airlines, car rental companies, etc.) work together to exchange travel services on the world's global distribution systems and the Internet distribution systems.
However, any mention of the Internet as a distribution channel for travel needs to start with an understanding of the existing electronic distribution infrastructure, the Global Distribution System (GDS). The airline industry created the first GDS in the 1960s as a way to keep track of flight schedules, availability, and prices. The GDS’s were actually among the first e-commerce companies in the world facilitating B2B electronic commerce as early as the mid 1970s, when SABRE (owned by American Airline) and Apollo (United) began installing their propriety internal reservations systems in travel agencies.
The legacy of these GDS’s, namely Amadeus, Galileo, Sabre and Worldspan, today provide the backbone to the Internet travel distribution system and additionally there are thousands of private label Web sites like Expedia and Orbitz, as well as hundreds of tour operators, corporate booking portals, and regional convention coordinators.
Yet although technology has given hoteliers so many ways to sell a room, it has become nearly impossible for a smaller hotel operator to understand, let alone intelligently manage the available channels for room sales. In fact if you are the average small hotel, many of these channels have an allotment of your rooms, and it is likely most are showing out of date rates and incorrect availability.
Communicating with all of these channels in order to keep them current on your inventory and rates, requires in some cases, daily manual intervention with multiple faxes and phone calls. More importantly, verifying the accuracy of each channel's current allotment and rate by the property is critical but rarely automated. Most times hotel operators do not know where or how their rooms are being sold or at what rate until the booking confirmation arrives.
The tangle of reservation channels is not likely to be simplified soon. But with regard to the easy accessibility of hotel reservations on the Internet directly booked from hotel websites with their own integrated reservations systems, the system is working.
Unfortunately even now, the overwhelming majority of small to medium sized hoteliers far from realizing and exploiting the Web's true potential are still accepting bookings by telephone, form and fax from their websites or selling their inventory at reduced rates or high commissions via Web-proficient online intermediaries.
As such, hoteliers, who want to broaden their room’s distribution intelligently, improve margins and maintain their brand identity in the face of on-line distributors that would turn hotel rooms into a lowest-price commodity should seriously consider integrating a real time reservations system into their own website for the ultimate benefit of their own hotel and visitors.
After all, commodities tend to look and taste the same. Do visitors want a box they will rent if the price is right or a room experience they will wish to revisit again and again? -

Orlando Vacation Homes
When planning your holiday to Orlando one of the most important decisions you can make is the type of accommodation, this can either be a hotel/motel or a vacation home. Certain factors will dictate your preference such as how many people are in your group, location and budget.
You might think booking into a motel or hotel will be the cheapest option, however, if you want a decent hotel close to the attractions, you will find the rates are much higher. Add to this food and entertainment costs, as you will either have to eat at the hotel or restaurants every day which can push up the cost of your holiday. Another disadvantage to staying in a hotel with your family is that space will be limited and you will be sharing one or even two rooms, not a lot of fun especially if your stay is for a week or longer. Everyone needs their privacy at times.
Something that might surprise you is that most vacation rentals come with a private swimming pool and a BBQ area providing secure surroundings for the younger ones. Also if the weather is bad or one or more of you don’t feel like going out of the door one day, you don’t have to because you can stay at “home” and take a dip in the pool, get a tan, play games or watch movies. Handy at night too, you can relax and chill out at the house and you don’t even have to play with your children as they can play and watch TV in their own rooms. During this personal and precious time you can relax and energize your self to be ready for the next trip to one of the amazing amusement parks!
If you are planning a trip with a few friends or maybe even a company trip, vacation homes can also work out better value. If you take the total cost of the rental home and divide it by the number of people per night it works out a lot more economical. Put the same number of people in a hotel and you will see the difference.
Holidays are great but sometimes can cost quit a bit of money. Eating out for example can push your spending up if you don’t have a choice and you need to go to restaurants every day. With a rental home you don’t have to because it has all the conveniences of your own home, including a fully equipped kitchen. This way you can take the opportunity to cook at home or arrange a BBQ, a much cheaper option.
Like any other decision take your time when you are looking for a vacation home don’t just go with the first one you find. Make sure you have a few option before you make any choices and maybe discuss your choices with friends and family. Some of the vacation rental homes in Orlando are decorated in a modern style and have all the comfort of your own home. You can get some wonderful deals if you do the research first because the perfect vacation home with that private swimming pool is just around the corner.
Michiel Van Kets provides articles for John Macrea who owns a vacation rental home near Disney World in Orlando and likes to ensure his guests get the very best deals when they go to see ‘The Mouse’. John likes to fish and water-ski. These are a few of the other things to do on a Disney World Vacation
Beach Vacation
Setting criteria is vital when selecting a hotel or other vacation lodging. Maybe you really want a hotel with a beach front or ocean view. Maybe serving continential breakfast is important as well or you may want a quite hotel. Often price is the deciding factor but don’t be so quick to take price over reality.
Waking up in the morning to a parking lot is no ones idea of “ocean view”. You came to see the beach and enjoy it, this is after all your vacation. After researching hotels in Lincoln City, a popular vacation spot, most beach fronts’ range in prince from $80.00 to $200.00 a night before taxes and other fees, varying on the weekend. Typically the search ends here, it is expensive unless you don’t want a beach view.
If you decide to keep looking you will find most hotels that are not ocean view still range in prices from $50.00 to $100.00 but they try to lure you with the always allusive continental breakfast. Typically the continental breakfast is simply coffee, orange juice and some sort of pastry such as a donut. I don’t know about you but this is hardly anything I would write home about.
Getting a good night sleep is always important while on vacation. Unlike beach front views and a donut, a quiet hotel is something they can not guarantee. Other guests can be loud simply by taking the elevator up or getting a soda, you hear doors slamming and talking all night long. I do not remember a time I was ever able to get a good night sleep in the hotel. Forget sleeping in, house keeping is usually there right at ten and check out is eleven. This to me is anything but relaxing.
The solution to a happy relaxing vacation is this, a vacation rental home. A vacation rental home provides many things a hotel can not. You are able to prepare all of your own meals, which will save some money since you are not eating out. You know your sleep will not be disturbed from other guests, house keeping will not beat down your door early in the morning and you may come and go as you please. This makes your vacation much less stressful. You are able to spend quality time with your family and have more meaningful candid moments together. You can enjoy ocean views and relax feeling no pressure to go anywhere or do anything quickly. Best of all, if you have a large group or others who want to tag along, a vacation home can be very inexpensive if you split the cost.
Regardless of your price range, you should be able to find something within your budget and criteria for a vacation home. Some beach front vacation homes are around $100.00 per night and can range up to $250.00 a night. The benefits of a vacation home far out weigh those of a hotel, this much is clear. Paying a little extra money might be worth it if it means you will have more time and less pressure while spending time with the ones you love the most. Do your research and decide for yourself, but remember people don’t often say they went to a hotel and had a fabulous, relaxing time, but they do say that about a vacation home.

TOURISM – IT’S GOOD AND BAD EFFECTS.
Tourism or tourist industry has become a major foreign exchange earner today. Sri Lanka is famous throughout the world as a tourist paradise.
There are many tourist attractions in our country. Some of them are ruined cities, water falls, sanctuaries, botanical gardens, and sandy beaches. Apart from these, there are a large number of tourist hotels with modern facilities. Also there are sufficient traveling facilities.
Tourism creates a large number of employment opportunities. Thousands of our youth work in tourist hotels. Tourists like very much to visit rural areas in Sri Lanka. Therefore our villagers can sell their products such as handicrafts to tourists and earn money. Information centre have been set up in almost all towns for tourists by the Ceylon Tourist Board. At these centers brochures and maps are issued to tourists. Tourists appreciate the hospitality of Sri Lankan People.
Now let us look at the bad effects of the tourism. It is said that tourism has affected the values of our people, particularly our youth. It is true that some tourists engage in anti – social acts. Some of the tourists are drug addicts or perverts. They corrupt our youth. Also they spread incurable diseases such as aids. But we should keep in mind that all the tourists are not black sheep. Many tourists come to rest and enjoy the beauty of Sri Lanka. Some tourists come to enrich their knowledge about our culture. They do no harm to anything or anyone.
As a result of the existing war in our country the number of tourists coming in has dwindled drastically. It is reported that several hotels have been closed down under this situation.
The Ministry of Tourist industry should take action to prevent the bad effects of the tourism. The institutions that are engaged in this trade should extend their cooperation towards the ministry in this connection. Then it will be possible to curb all the bad effects and to promote tourism in Sri Lanka.
In a recent survey conducted by the World Tourism Organization it has been revealed that promotion of sports activities will lead to the promotion of tourist destinations. Therefore the Ministry of Tourism should take action to find out the possibility of holding international. Sports events like Olympic, Games, Cricket, Athletic World Championships in Sri Lanka.

We Made Travel Agent’s “Hot New Hotels” List!
There’s nothing cookie-cutter about the boutique-style Wyland Waikiki which opened last April. The property is several blocks from Waikiki Beach and proud of it, billing itself as an alternative choice for sophisticated travelers. The hotel’s Chill Room has massage chairs, 65-inch, flat-screen TVs and complimentary Xbox. Contact Stacy Keen, director of sales and marketing for the hotel.
So how did we get selected? According to Travel Agent’s website, “We turned to Travel Agent magazine’s top in-house destination editors and freelancers, who have traveled the world to sample some of the best; we also consulted with three industry experts and globetrotters: Ignacio Maza, executive vice president of Signature Travel Network; Suzanne Hall, senior director of marketing and development, land products for Ensemble Travel Group; and Albert Herrera, vice president of Virtuoso’s Hotels and Resorts Program.”
That sounds like proof enough to me, but I encourage you to come see this hotel for yourself. I’d like to take a moment to recognize Stacy Keen, the hotel’s director of sales and marketing, for her efforts in keeping the guests coming and the amazing staff that takes care of each guest like family during their stay.
